The Costa Rican banana industry is striving to obtain the
“carbon neutral” seal. The sector made a public pledge to join the national
struggle against global warming and to become the first farm industry in this
country to have a neutral carbon balance. This means that the national growers
of bananas will implement the measures and will allocate the funds needed for
their environmentalist actions to compensate the amount of polluting gases that
their activities produce. The chief executive of the Banana National
Corporation (CORBANA in Spanish), Jorge Sauma, said that these efforts against
global warming will also mean added-value for Costa Rican bananas in foreign
markets.
