Big Night in Costa Rican Soccer

Last night was the Costa Rican Soccer Championships for the elite level teams. The two teams playinger were from Heredia (near San Jose) and Liberia (Guanacaste). The equivalent of the Dallas Cowboys NFL football team (a lot of people love them and a lot of people hate them) lost in the semi-finals. They are the team from Saprissa. Saprissa is usually in the finals of the tournament and was upset by the loss so they tried to say that several players on the opposing team played illegally and, therefore, Saprissa should be awarded the win and entrance into the finals.

Learn more about Saprissa here.

It was a rare occurance not to have one of the larger clubs in the finals but Costa Rican's love their soccer (futbol) regardless of who's playing. Just as the NBA may have a Orlando vs. Denver final. It sure wouldn't be Los Angeles (Kobe) vs. Cleveland (LeBron) but I would still watch it.

We started off watching the match at a bar/restaurant about one mile off of the main highway through San Isidro del General. With the current exchange rate, a beer cost less than $1 and there were a handful of appetizers that also cost less than $1. For the younger readers out there, a shot of Jaggermeister only cost $2. Given those prices I didn't want to leave, however, we were meeting a larger group at La Cascada.

We piled into one car (sober driver) and went to La Cascada. La Casada  (the waterfall) is quite a bit more expensive but has a lot more energy to it and has the best tortilla chips with beans and cheese in the world.  The owner joined us for 15 minutes of talking. We shared some jokes, watched the match and had a great time.

After several hours of laughing, talking and watching soccer we all went back to our homes.

By the way - Liberia won the match 3-0.
